Amy Williams
Gold for Great Britain!
Amy Williams has recently brought home a Gold Medal for Great Britain by winning her Olympic sport even though there were many disputes over her helmet which had been previously approved by the officials, she wasn’t nervous about this; it just made her even more determined to ‘go for Gold!’ Amy Williams is a 27 year old girl, who had one ambition going into the Olympics & that was to get a Gold medal for the GB team, which she did & it ended up being the only gold – or any colour medal – the GB team managed to grab. Though, Shelly Rudman & Kristan Bromley both came close to a medal ending up in 6th place. The final member of the GB skeleton team – Adam Pengilly who was expected to get a medal – ended up in 18th place with 3 poor runs of the track in Whistler.
Amy Williams became the first solo Winter Olympic gold medallist for GB in 30 years, she was overwhelmed by this & thanks everyone for all there support. As well as winning Gold she also broke her own track record with a time of three minutes & thirty-five point six-four seconds! Before becoming a skeleton athlete she was a 400m runner, but changed sport as she was not good enough for the GB team.
Amy has great support she says from all her family, friends, fellow athletes & everyone else in GB. Her twin sister & older brother were said to have been ecstatic when Amy won Gold as couldn’t wait to congratulate her & Arthur – her sled. Even before the final run Amy chances of winning gold were pretty high, with her ending up winner all four heats! Amy said ‘I had a mixture of feelings of exhilaration & terror as I came hurtling down the track, but I thoroughly enjoyed it!’ She was proud & excited about all of her runs, & knows she tried really hard…well, it defiantly paid off!
Amy is actually fairly local to us as she was born & grew up in Cambridge; she started Skeleton training at the University-of-Bath, but was unable to make the GB team in 2006. For the reason of that they could only enter a single athlete into it, & Shelly Rudman was the better person at the time. But, in 2010 this changed allowing Shelly Rudman and Amy Williams to participate in this event together. This meant GB producing a Gold medal for the first time in 30 years!
