Tescos report
The new Tescos proposed for the market town of Whittlesey has caused a bit of a dispute. The proposed shop will be located just off Cemetery road and will be behind the ‘New queen street surgery’ and the car park will be adjacent to the surgery car park.
The proposed plans from Tescos are that it will be an eco shop selling everyday sort of things, plus luxuries of clothes, CDs and DVDs could be sold as well. There will be 177 car parking bays and some of these will be used for disabled badge holders only. As the aim of the shop is to be an eco shop, it will carry on its theme to the outside of the shop with 68 cycle spaces to encourage the town to be as eco friendly as possible when shopping. There will also be plants, trees and shrubbery to keep the surroundings green.
Unfortunately, 5 houses are going to have to be demolished along with a local guesthouse and the town’s fire station. Four out of five houses have agreed to be sold to make way for Tescos, however, one household is holding firm and is adamant to stay. The women who owns the house has said she does not want to leave her FAMILY home however much she gets offered for the house. She said her house is nice and wouldn’t want to leave. However, she has said the surroundings of the house have been vandalised with rubbish being left out-side the gate and her door.
However, there are many, many people for the proposed site, people have said they will not have to travel to Hampton or March for a decent sized supermarket, therefore it will cut down on Carbon dioxide levels.

It will hopefully bring people back to Whittlesey, also Whittlesey will get a new fire station, and best of all (all being well) local people will be employed and will get new jobs.
Meanwhile, although people against Tescos believe these are very valid points, they believe Whittlesey does not need another new building for a shop as there are plenty of empty shops around the town centre which could be used and adding another big shop could mean the town centre could become a ghost town. They also say we have two perfectly good super markets, alright they don’t have a massive variety, but between them they do have a good stock of things. They also say that although Tescos is providing new jobs, in the long run, more jobs could be lost due to Tescos taking all the business. They also believe that the proposed road layout could become a very big problem for the rush hour traffic which is when more people would be shopping and more people would need to get through the town to get to their chosen destination. They also believe should there be an emergeny, -which will always be one, the fire engine would struggle to get through all the traffic caused by Tescos. Many people who are campaigning against the shop are saying that they would rather an out of town supermarket instead, which plans have been put forward to the council.
Let’s just say, when the answer whether shop will or will not be built, it will definitely be big news in Whittlesey.
